I know, I know, everybody and their mom is talking about setting goals for 2017. I mean, we are a full month into fourth quarter, so it’s the cool thing to do, right?
But let me ask you a question: How much time do you spend thinking through your goals and creating a plan to work towards them?
You can scribble down a few goals on a piece of paper and call it good, or you can learn how to set big goals for your blog and business and actually achieve them. << That sounds better, right?
HOW TO SET BIG GOALS FOR YOUR BLOG AND BUSINESS
Now, I’m not going to sit here and tell you to use a certain planner or system. I truly believe there isn’t a one-size-fits-all method, so that’s not what this is.
**TIP** I want to recommend that you use one notebook, or one file in Google Drive, to keep track of your goals and statistics throughout the year, and to help you map out how you plan to achieve these goals. Keep this notebook or file visible, and visit it often.
#1 – Create a Starting Point
It’s important to make note of your current starting point, and by starting point, I mean making note of your existing statistics.
Write down the following:
- Average monthly pageviews
- Total pageviews
- Most & least popular blog posts, and their pageviews
- Most popular traffic sources
- Social media numbers
- Email subscribers, open rate, and click rate
- Income generated – monthly average and overall for the year
And anything else that you want to measure. These numbers will serve as your reference point from which everything you do going forward will be measured. It’s impossible to see how far you’ve come if you don’t know where you started.
#2 – Limit Yourself to Three Big Goals
A lot of us are guilty of being overzealous in the goal-setting department, but when we try to accomplish too many things, we tend to get burned out and accomplish nothing.
Three is the perfect number, and if they’re big enough goals, that’s all you’ll have time and energy for in one year anyway!
Now, let me make something super clear. This is something I’ve had to reiterate to my #FinishBigStartStrong students already.
TASKS ARE NOT GOALS. You might have a bunch of projects you want to pursue, but those aren’t goals, they are to-do’s. Goals are meant to be big, probably a little scary, and will make a difference in your life when you accomplish them.
For example, a GOAL would be to make a specific amount of money from your blog next year. A TASK would be to host a monthly linky party. The linky party might be cool for you to do, but it’s not a goal.
Take your time and think hard about your goals, and narrow them down to three. If you brainstorm several goals, you might start to see a recurring theme, and you’ll be able to lump several tasks together to form one big goal.
#3 – Make Them Scary
Your goals should be big enough that they make you a little nervous…maybe you even sweat a little. You know why?
Having goals that are a little bit scary forces you to step outside of your comfort zone and work harder than you’ve ever worked before. And when you accomplish those goals that scared you a little bit, think of how much bigger you’ll set your goals going forward!
It’s empowering to do something that scares us, and to actually succeed. Setting goals that seem slightly impossible, instead of safe, fuels our creativity, making us think outside the box in order to make those goals a reality. The only limitation you have on your goals is YOU, so get out of your own way!
#4 – Make Them Public
This.Is.Important. Friend, you can’t keep those goals to yourself. They shouldn’t be a secret. Making your goals public, whether it’s sharing them with your spouse, your best friend, or a mastermind group, helps you hold yourself accountable, and gives you a built-in support system.
For some reason, we can justify letting ourselves down when we don’t do something we intended to do. But when we know that someone is watching, we’re more inclined to put in the extra effort to make them proud of us!
#5 – Give Them a Deadline
It’s far too easy to be nonchalant about our goals when they don’t have a set end date. By nature, we work better when we know something is due on a certain day. (Remember those all-nighters in college to finish a term paper?)
It’s called hustle, my friend. If you set a goal to be a published author, put a date on the calendar for the publication of your first book, then do everything you need to do to make it happen.
Goals with deadlines also help you measure your progress. For example, if you set a goal to make $100,000 next year, you can make that a little easier to swallow when you consider that you are trying to make $25,000 each quarter.
Put your deadlines on the calendar, too, in permanent marker. You might even want to set yourself up with a countdown!
#6 – Schedule Evaluation Time
So you’ve got these big goals, and you’re kind of scared of them, to be honest. But you’ve written them down, and you’ve told your friends what you’re working towards. Now what?
Pull out your calendar and schedule time to sit with your goals AT LEAST once each quarter. Don’t write it in pencil, either. Grab a red Sharpie and mark that time off, and hold it sacred.
You need to revisit your goals multiple times throughout the year for several reasons. You want to make sure you’re on track, first of all. Like we mentioned in #5, your goals should have a deadline, so scheduling time to check on your progress will help you visually see where you are in the grand scheme of things.
Secondly, you need to be sure your goals are still your goals. Life happens. Things change. You might think you want to write a book, but three months into the year, you realize you hate the writing process and you’d rather create a video course instead. Give yourself grace, and don’t feel trapped by your goals.
Bottom Line: Your goals should excite you and make you a little bit nervous. Don’t overwhelm yourself with too many goals, either.
